The University of Otago was established in 1869 by Scottish settlers who possessed a strong conviction in the transforming power of education. Today the University has about 20,000 students, and campuses in Dunedin, Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland and Southland. With more than 80 academic departments organised into four divisions—Business, Health Sciences, Humanities and Sciences—the University of Otago offers about 180 courses and is the only New Zealand university offering Dentistry, Dental Technology, Surveying, and Medical Radiation Therapy. There are over 77,000 Otago graduates living all over the world having studied a huge variety of subjects. Research underpins all academic activity at Otago and a strong research culture is fostered across all divisions. This was highlighted by Otago’s success under the New Zealand Government’s 2012 Performance-Based Research Funding (PBRF) quality evaluation, which confirmed Otago's position as the leading research institution in New Zealand. Otago was the only university to be ranked in the top four in all average quality score (AQS) measures in the PBRF evaluation. A comprehensive range of academic, technical, electronic, recreational, and welfare services help students and staff at the University of Otago to achieve their best in their coursework and research.
