About the Role:
The General Manager Investment Management is a senior management and leadership position in the Regional Development and Commercial Services (RDCS) group within MBIE. The role is accountable for leading the Investment Management team at Kānoa to assist, originate, evaluate, negotiate and structure new investment propositions as well as manage the existing $1bn loan and equity investment book within the larger portfolio of $4.5 billion of investments.
As a member of the RDCS Leadership Team, this role will actively contribute to the development of the RDCS strategy and business plans and will provide critical leadership in the delivery of Kānoa’s strategic investment programme. You will be responsible for ensuring the investment strategies and activities align with government policies, mandates and public interest objectives while adhering to robust governance frameworks in a complex regulatory environment. You will provide clear and concise advice that supports ministerial decision-making.
Kānoa is responsible for delivering government investment into New Zealand’s regions to build their economies, grow businesses, and strengthen communities. Kānoa has supported many regional projects across New Zealand through various government funding initiatives including the Regional Infrastructure Fund.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Strong commercial acumen, proven ability to identify, negotiate and deliver complex investments and with demonstrated understanding of the business and investment environment in New Zealand
- Strategic expertise in identifying investment opportunities, developing business cases, and assessing business capability
- Financial, analytical, and investment experience with in-depth knowledge of New Zealand government and corporate finance
- Senior leadership experience within a large complex business or public sector organization, with knowledge of investment, risk, and assurance in the public sector
- Proven track record of leading a strategic function at a senior management level and contributing to wider organizational goals
- Outstanding judgement, problem-solving skills, and awareness of political impacts
- Ability to establish and maintain high-performing teams
- Experience in making complex business decisions to achieve strategic goals
- Tertiary qualification or extensive relevant experience in strategic management
- Legal right to work in New Zealand
- Consent to and pass a credit check due to financial delegations
