Location: 15 Forth Street, Invercargill Employment type: Permanent Full Time About Council: With 11% of the total land area of New Zealand, including Fiordland National Park and Stewart Island Rakiura, Southland District Council has the largest land area to manage of any territorial authority. Council not only encompasses the management and improvement of physical assets such as roads, bridges, water supply, cemeteries, and parks but also the Southland community's social, economic, cultural, and environmental well-beings. Our 200+ staff are diverse in their backgrounds, skillsets, and locations, spread across three Invercargill offices (Forth Street, 20 and 42 Don Street) and seven area offices situated at Riverton, Otautau, Te Anau, Winton, Oban, Lumsden, and Wyndham. About the role: The environmental policy team is responsible for policy development and implementation of legislated changes to the District Plan. The core to our success is a well-maintained and legally robust district plan that supports the Southland District Council’s vision for the future of Southland. As a senior environmental planner policy, your experience and knowledge will be pivotal to the success of our district plan which will enable Council to make sound decisions in relation to the District Plan. Day to day, the role will be filled with variety but some of the key accountabilities will include: Undertaking research, analysis, and evaluation of the District Plan Drafting and presenting reports for consideration by hearing panels and council Representing council on working parties, iwi liaison committees, and public consultations Preparing and coordinating submissions to the central government Building and maintaining effective relationships with colleagues and key stakeholders Our ideal candidate will have a tertiary qualification in planning, resource management, or environmental management and at least four years of post-study policy-focused experience. Membership with the New Zealand Planning Institute would be an advantage.
