Professional development and upskilling support About the role:
As Waitaki District Council’s Health and Safety Advisor, reporting to the People and Capability Manager you’ll play a key role in strengthening how Council approaches health, safety and wellbeing. This role offers a rare opportunity to step back, evaluate what’s working (and what’s not), and help shape clear and effective systems. You’ll bring practical insight and influence to lift capability, improve critical risk management and support managers and teams to embed safe working practices. This is a hands-on role where your expertise will genuinely make a difference across the whole organisation.
Role Responsibilities / Duties:
Assess and improve Council’s health, safety and wellbeing systems, identifying opportunities to streamline and strengthen processes.
Lead and enhance critical risk and risk management practices.
Refine policies, procedures and auditing frameworks to support consistent, practical safe work practices.
Coach and support managers and staff to grow capability, confidence and engagement with everyday safety
Conduct internal and peer audits and provide clear reporting to leadership and governance groups to drive continuous improvement.
Oversee health monitoring and return-to-work programmes. Skills & Experience:
Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management (or similar)
3 years’ experience in Health and Safety Management/Practices
Experience in H&S training, auditing, incident and risk management
Working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures relating to local government.
Strong communicator with the ability to build relationships and trust at all levels.
Experience working within a diverse or complex organisations.
