Whangārei Boys’ High School is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and professionally qualified head of guidance to join our student support team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing and development of young men in a vibrant school community.

About the role:

As our head guidance counsellor, you will play a central role in supporting the emotional, social, and educational wellbeing of our students. You will work closely with senior leadership, deans, whānau leaders, staff, families, and external agencies to ensure the holistic development of our students.

Key responsibilities:

Counselling services:
Provide confidential counselling for students through self-referrals and referrals from staff, families, and external agencies.
Facilitate family and restorative conferences and group counselling sessions (e.g. grief, trauma, and abuse support).
Conduct home visits where appropriate.

Programme development:
Assist in designing and delivering programmes that promote a safe and inclusive school environment.
Lead initiatives in areas such as anger management, assertiveness, and other life skills.
Support student transitions, including pre-enrolment interviews and inductions.

Liaison and advocacy:
Act as an advocate for students in key forums (e.g. disciplinary hearings, family group conferences).
Build strong working relationships with community organisations and support agencies (e.g. Police, Oranga Tamariki, health services).

Supervision of Te Awatea wellbeing centre:
Supporting first aid staff and external agencies such as rubicon and DHB nurses.
Overseeing day-to-day operations in the wellbeing centre.

Ideal candidate will have:

  • Registration with the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) or equivalent
  • Proven experience in secondary school counselling or youth mental health services
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills.
    A commitment to the principles of restorative practice and culturally responsive care
  • A passion for working with young people and supporting their holistic development.
