Hato Hone St John has been serving New Zealanders and working to save lives since 1885. As well as providing Ambulance Services, our programmes and team of over 11,000 staff and volunteers are helping to build strong, resilient communities across the motu; supporting everyone in Aotearoa to live healthier, happier and longer lives.
Ambulance Officers who hold the portfolio of Te Manawaroa will play a crucial role in a mana māori motuhake (by Māori for Māori) approach to strengthening connections with Māori communities with a focus on tāngata whenua.
They will learn and share tikanga along with holding an understanding of the importance of contributing to achieving Māori health equity for all Māori patients and their whānau.
Our Ambulance & Events Officers provide care and support to our patients through their journey which may start at a 111 call and end either being referred to another health care provider, treated on scene, or transported to a medical facility.
We offer NZQA-recognised training and will give you all the support and education needed to make you safe and effective in the field. Once accepted, your online and classroom training and workbooks will take around 6-9 months to complete.

You will have a desire to help people in a compassionate and professional way and be committed to continuous learning and training. Without question, you will be trustworthy and reliable, able to display excellent communication skills (written and oral) and have great time management.
To succeed in this position, you will require the following, and we will assist you in attaining them:
A full and clean NZ driver's licence for at least 12 months or have completed an approved NZTA advanced driving course (if full licence held for less than 12 months)
To be 18 years of age or over
New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
A clean Police record
To be able to pass Hato Hone St John assessments - physical assessment, health questionnaire, literacy and numeracy assessments and an interview
To meet our medical standards
To be available for regular duty and training (approximately two 12 hour shifts and one training session per month)
