Critical. is a growing cleantech startup on a mission to end global plastics pollution by accelerating the transition to circular building materials. We do this through the Critical. Cleanstone our range of beautiful, durable and 100% recycled plastic panels for building fit outs. We are building the technology platform to convert non recyclable plastics into panels to disrupt the global $938B market for timber/ fiber based panels and our plan is to put Critical. micro factories into every city in the world.As a Maori company we exist to uplift the mauri (life force) of te taiao (the natural world) as our health and wellbeing is dependent on the wellbeing of our natural world. Therefore when the waiora, or the wellbeing of our land, rivers and oceans are affected, it affects us all. We started Critical because we want to be good tipuna (ancestors) so that generations beyond us can thrive for thousands of years to come. As we scale in Aotearoa, we plan to foster and grow partnerships with iwi (Maori tribal authorities) and as we scale globally we will seek to grow partnership with indigenous authorities and communities. Job descriptionCritical is looking for a Mid or Senior Development Engineer with a background in manufacturing, preferably in polymer processing. As a small company with large ambitions, this job is full of challenging opportunities. The type of person we are looking forStartups is not for the faint of heart. You will be entering a high pressure and fast paced environment where change happens fast. Critical is developing cutting edge technology there is no precedent therefore you need to be comfortable operating outside of the engineering textbook. You will be asked to invent new ways to help our company get to our technical goals very quickly on a very tight budget. You will be asked to find the fastest route to success. Working outside of your comfort zone is an expectation here. It is also deeply rewarding. Your work and decisions will highly impact the future direction of Critical and as we grow. ResponsibilitiesYou will be the brains, hands and feet of developing and completing Critical.'s next generation microfactory technology within 12 months and are expected to uplift our production capabilities every quarter while executing required engineering breakthroughs. This looks like:Project managementOversee and drive modifications to existing equipment and processProject manage tasks from start to finish while driving executionPlan improvement projects with finite costs and timelinesWork with Operations, Production, Technicians, Consultants, Suppliers and Management to ensure coordinated efforts in scheduling and planning production upgrades.Research, make recommendations, and potentially commision new equipment from overseas suppliers and identify any issues for compatibilityDevelop and document a deep understanding of technical requirements through our current manufacturing process and clearly communicate specifications and requirements to external fabricators. Work and guide external contractors engaged by the businesses for parallel manufacturing and R&D effortsProcess Design improvementsSpecify new hardware and production processes to support improvements to product quality and factory productivity.Solve production and QA problems with a combination of process changes and/or equipment upgrades or modifications.Practical experience in problem solving, design, and fabricatiobSome hands on abilities to make and assemble jigs, and build simple production improvements. Send more complicated assemblies out for fabrication.Build and deliver efficiently with limited time and budgetBe able to understand drawings, sketches, and 3D CAD systemsDocument and researchResearch issues, design trials, and analyse test data to make informed decisions about production changes.Plan and conduct in-production tests to discover information about how or why an issue is occurring and methods to fix or take corrective action.Document findings in reports, and update procedure documentation when necessary.Administrative Communicate progress and challenges effectively to managementAdvise, coach, and train technicians in the factory on any process improvements Requirements and desired skillsYou should be a well-rounded engineer with an analytical and strategic mind. Broad knowledge of mechanical and thermodynamic systems, fabrication and machinery and materials knowledge including polymers is desired.High tolerance in dealing with unknowns, an incomplete data set, and a measure of risk tolerance is required.Experience with polymer processing or engineering. A background of Mechanical Engineering, and/or Materials Science with Polymers is preferred.Experience in production/manufacturing or heavy machineryExperience in technical field, engineering or R&DExperience in GMP practices, Quality Assurance, and Process controlProficient in digital CAD packages like Solidworks to design simple, efficient, cost effective real-world solutions in our factory.Basic fabrication abilities using powered tools and equipment to do alterations or modifications to equipment.
