GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Medical Laboratory Technician I, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) I carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently to ensure accurate results and records, requiring a professional level of knowledge to interpret test results used in diagnosis and treatment.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA:
- Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting test results.
- Follow procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record-keeping.
- Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested similarly to patient specimens.
- Adhere to quality control policies and document all activities.
- Follow established policies when test systems are not within performance standards.
- Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or report them immediately.
- Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from standards.
- If qualified, perform high complexity testing under supervision.
- Perform routine and high complexity tests on blood and body fluids, prepare samples and reagents, and interpret results.
- Perform equipment maintenance and quality control for reagents.
- Keep accurate records of quality control, maintenance, and workload data.
- Document corrective actions taken in the Chemistry Laboratory.
- Refer problems or unusual results to appropriate personnel.
- Perform clerical duties such as answering calls, alerting results, disposing of specimens, and inventory management.
- Participate in Proficiency Testing programs.
- Communicate with hospital personnel regarding lab policies and test results.
- Order and maintain laboratory supplies.
- Stay current with developments in clinical chemistry instrumentation and techniques.
- Promote hospital and laboratory mission, professionalism, and excellence.
- Adhere to safety and infection control policies.
- Perform other duties as required, including general lab tasks.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate Degree in laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
- ASCP certification or eligibility required.
