GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Medical Laboratory Technician I, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) I carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the department's standard operating procedures. Works independently to ensure accurate results and records, requiring a professional level of knowledge to interpret test results used in diagnosis and treatment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA:
2. Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and reporting test results.
3. Follow procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record-keeping.
4. Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested similarly to patient specimens.
5. Adhere to quality control policies and document all activities.
6. Follow established policies when test systems are not within performance standards.
7. Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or report them immediately.
8. Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from standards.
9. If qualified, perform high complexity testing under supervision.
10. Perform routine and high complexity tests on blood and body fluids, prepare samples and reagents, and interpret results.
11. Perform equipment maintenance and quality control for reagents.
12. Keep accurate records of quality control, maintenance, and workload data.
13. Document corrective actions taken in the Chemistry Laboratory.
14. Refer problems or unusual results to appropriate personnel.
15. Perform clerical duties such as answering calls, alerting results, disposing of specimens, and inventory management.
16. Participate in Proficiency Testing programs.
17. Communicate with hospital personnel regarding lab policies and test results.
18. Order and maintain laboratory supplies.
19. Stay current with developments in clinical chemistry instrumentation and techniques.
20. Promote hospital and laboratory mission, professionalism, and excellence.
21. Adhere to safety and infection control policies.
22. Perform other duties as required, including general lab tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Associate Degree in laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution.
2. ASCP certification or eligibility required.
