Wintering approx. 75,000 stock units compromising of sheep, beef and deer Oversee and manage the deer system, including the breeding programme and velvet harvest, on one of New Zealand’s largest and most progressive farms The Opportunity This is a key leadership role responsible for the performance and development of the deer system across a 7,821 Ha effective grazing platform, with 3,500 Ha deer fenced of which you will over see approximately 1400 Ha of this. You’ll lead the breeding programme and velvet harvest, while also supporting the wider livestock operation. Working closely with the Farm Business Manager, you’ll drive on-farm performance, coach and mentor staff, and bring fresh thinking to the business. This is an exciting time to join Rangitāiki Station as we transition from venison to velvet production, with significant investment in genetics and infrastructure to build a high-performing velvet herd. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage all aspects of the deer operation, including breeding and velvet production Take ownership of the deer system, including the transition from venison finishing to velvet breeding Optimise farm performance and improve operational processes Provide operational leadership and execution of farming operations Lead, motivate, and mentor a team of 1 permanent staff member and seasonal support Manage and update farm data using Farmax, Farm IQ, and other systems Ensure accurate and timely stock data recording and reporting The Farm Rangitaiki Station is New Zealand’s third largest farm, and Pāmu’s second largest farm, with 7,821 ha supporting 75,000 stock units in sheep, beef and deer and run by an engaged and driven team of 22 people10,000 breeding ewes + replacements A growing velvet system with 1,000 MA stags and 800 hinds (targeting 1,700 stags)A venison finishing operation (currently 1,400 MS weaners – final season)A large-scale cattle trading operation with bulls and steers Located on the Napier – Taupō road, approximately 40 minutes from Taupō, Rangitāiki Station is predominately flat – rolling country. With altitude ranging from 650m – 900m ASL, winters are long, followed by explosive spring growth.
