Engineering Officers are responsible for the acquisition, maintenance, and through-life support of all NZDF aircraft and aeronautical equipment. You will need to develop and apply broad aeronautical engineering knowledge. Success in this role relies on your people skills, leadership potential, and motivation to take on responsibility early in your career.

Requirements Basics Must be 18 years old by the time you graduate from recruit course.

Direct entry : Hold, or be in your final year of, a BE(Hons) or BEng(Tech) in mechanical, electrical, electronics, mechatronics, or aeronautical engineering.

Scholarship entry : The Air Force offers scholarships for engineering students demonstrating the qualities required to become an Engineering Officer. Minimum educational requirements include NCEA Level 3 with 18 credits in Level 3 Mathematics (preferably Calculus) and Physics, and University Entrance.

The scholarships include:

RNZAF Undergraduate Scheme: Study at an approved university while the Air Force covers your fees and provides a living allowance, with a return of service obligation. Graduate Incentive Scheme: Study at your chosen university, with incentive payments after degree completion, without a return of service obligation.

Training is thorough and advanced. After completing the General Engineering Officer Training Course, you will spend 24 months in the Air Force.

Job on base

Engineering Officers work in various roles across Air Force Bases and Headquarters, managing projects, designing repairs, investigating failures, or leading maintenance teams.

Job on deployment

On operational squadrons, Engineering Officers deploy with aircraft, leading technical teams to ensure aircraft are operational and safe. This challenging role tests your technical and leadership skills in demanding conditions.

Training and Benefits

All officers complete a course covering customs, drill, military law, field skills, and weapons training. You earn a salary during training, with allowances for field, sea, overseas, or operational deployment.
