About the Role The Associate Director of Midwifery is a key leadership role that offers opportunities for personal growth, strategic professional development, and the chance to influence midwifery and maternity services across Canterbury and the West Coast. This role oversees the operational management of Maternity Services at Christchurch Women’s Hospital, including Outpatients, the Maternity Assessment Unit, Birthing Suite, and Maternity Ward. We seek an individual committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and implementing Health New Zealand’s vision of equitable outcomes for Māori and vulnerable populations. Key initiatives include: Supporting the delivery of health services incorporating Māori midwifery paradigms, models, and standards, and embedding Turanga Kaupapa into clinical practice in all settings. Practicing evidence-informed clinical practice and continuous quality improvement, including participation in quality, safety, and care programs, policy development, and data collection for audits focused on equity. Strengthening the maternity workforce to meet the needs of whānau requiring tertiary care. About the Service Christchurch Women’s Hospital, located in central Ōtautahi (Christchurch), is a modern acute teaching hospital for midwifery and obstetrics. Canterbury has over 6,000 births annually and is the tertiary referral center for most of Te Waipounamu (South Island). We have four community units in Ashburton, Kaikoura, Oromairaki, Rangiora, and a central city primary birthing unit, Kurawaka: Waipapa. Learn more about us in this video: https://youtu.be/L6a_a Yd R8 BYAbout You We are looking for a candidate with strong leadership skills who supports, enables, and develops others with integrity, vision, and cultural responsiveness. Proven leadership experience and competence in a leadership role. Excellent communication skills and ability to build relationships in complex environments. Broad knowledge of the health and disability sector and relevant legislation. Understanding of Tikanga Māori and Te Ao Māori, with the ability to integrate Turanga Kaupapa into the maternity environment. Postgraduate study in Midwifery, Māori Health, or Public Health is preferred. Senior managerial, clinical, or operational leadership experience with strategic thinking abilities. Ability to inspire, direct, and follow through; reflective, accountable, and willing to challenge practices not serving whānau or staff. Proficient in computer literacy. At least 5 years of recent experience as a Registered Midwife. Registered with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand with a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
