The Vascular Sonographer I will learn to perform and document vascular studies in the Vascular Diagnostic Laboratory. The Vascular Sonographer I must maintain a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve. Duties will include greeting and assisting patients, preparing and maintaining examination rooms, maintaining laboratory equipment, assisting in test scheduling, and interacting with hospital staff to promote the use of laboratory services for the best patient care. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop the ability to assess patients to determine if they are able to undergo procedures. Review results of previous examinations. Consult with the Chief Sonographer or reading physician if it is unclear what vascular test is ordered. Develop the ability to obtain appropriate medical history and explain testing procedures to patients. Perform noninvasive peripheral vascular ultrasound tests efficiently and accurately, following documented protocols, including: Plethysmographic studies of the peripheral arterial system, with correct cuff placement and accurate Doppler measurements. Duplex ultrasound to identify all anatomical structures, determine presence and extent of disease, acquire images, and provide descriptive information for the physician's report. Understanding spectral analysis of Doppler signals to identify arterial flow characteristics, including spectral Doppler flow signals and peak systolic velocities. Exercise testing with Doppler ultrasound arterial pressure measurements. Adhere to hospital infection control guidelines at all times. Document concise preliminary results and enter findings into the hospital's electronic medical record system. Review results and notify physicians as necessary based on department policies. Maintain organized patient examination rooms with necessary supplies. Assist in scheduling patient examinations as needed. Voluntarily develop and maintain knowledge of vascular technology. Collaborate with medical and nursing staff to promote appropriate use of laboratory services. Perform other related duties as assigned. Skills and Abilities Required: Effective operation of sonographic equipment. Use of independent judgment to acquire optimal diagnostic information. Integration of diagnostic sonograms, laboratory results, patient history, and medical records. Evaluation of sonograms to acquire diagnostic information and communicate findings to physicians. Effective communication with patients and healthcare teams. Establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships. Adherence to departmental procedures. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Independent learning and clinical skill development. Ability to work under stress and handle emergency situations. Interaction with diverse patient populations. Maintaining prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning. Qualifications: RV T or RVT eligible (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers exam). Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, a related field, or equivalent experience.
